Healing Prayer

Prayer should be part of the treatment and recovery plan when you or a loved one is sick or injured.

Healing Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for hearing this prayer and helping me as I face this injury. I trust in you and submit to your will, and I know that you will never forsake me. Please give me the strength and discipline to persevere through my treatment and recovery, and the wisdom to participate constructively in my own treatment. Please guide the doctors in their care for me, and please bless my friends and family as they support me through this challenge.

Discussion

The healing prayer above can be customized as needed. For example, you can replace “injury” with “illness” or with a more specific description of the problem. And if you are praying for someone other than yourself, you can replace instances of “I” and “me” with the name of the person you are praying for.

Prayer can be an immense help and comfort in times of illness and injury. If you, or someone that you care about, is facing a serious illness, disease, or injury, do not neglect to pray earnestly for healing and recovery. Fear and doubt in such times is completely natural, but you should not let despair overwhelm you. As Jesus told his disciples, you should “always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1).

Do not doubt that God has the power to heal the sick. “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people” (Matthew 4:23). And do not doubt that “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22). Remember that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).

You should work closely with your doctors and take an active role in your own treatment and recovery. Take medications as prescribed, don’t skip or delay needed appointments, and work diligently in needed therapies. But also pray regularly. Use this challenging period to build your relationship with God, and trust that God will hear your healing prayer.

As Proverbs 3:5-8 says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”
